Compassionate Leader Profile:Rhonda DiMascio

A Compassionate Leader: Rhonda DiMascio, President of the Alice Paul Institute Founded in 1985, the Alice Paul Institute (API) educates the public about the life and work of Alice Stokes Paul (1885-1977), suffragist, author of the Equal Rights Amendment, and lifelong activist for womens equality. A compassionate leader is one who leads by example, and as president of the Alice Paul Institute, Rhonda DiMascio sets an example for all those who work with her. Since 2000, she has led the organization through growth and significant changes while maintaining the respect of those within the organization and in the community at large. Starting as the only full-time employee and armed with a masters degree and a portable air conditioner, she has created a harmonious, well-oiled machine of four staff members, fourteen board members, and countless volunteers. While juggling a fifteen member Board of Trustees, a staff of three, fundraising goals, strategic planning, audits, programs, and the maintenance of a 200 year-old farmhouse, DiMascio is ever mindful of APIs overall goals and is strategic in her collective plans to execute them. DiMascio believes that APIs mission to develop future leaders does not stop at just its programs, but also includes the staff and board as well. She consistently seeks out a diverse group of women to govern the organization and is proactive in providing leadership development opportunities for her young staff. Leadership doesn't have an age limit, says DiMascio, and a good leader doesnt ask anyone to do something they have not done or are not willing to do themselves. Frequently seen dragging trash cans up the long driveway in high heels before rushing off to a meeting in Trenton, she exemplifies a leader who truly cares about those around her and the organization at large.
