17 ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

  1. Alumni Groups:  Graduates from leadership programs continue to be involved and provide continued support through one or more of the following: meet regularly, periodically, or annually; may communicate via the Internet; have newsletters; volunteer with their original leadership program as advisors or mentors.
  1. Assessments and Feedback: Assessments fall into two categories: Self and 360. Personal assessments provide individuals insights into their values, behaviors, styles, skills, and attitudes. A 360-degree feedback is an assessment of leaders' performance from their colleagues, direct reports, the boss, the boss's peers, or even customers and vendors.
  1. Awards: Awards are given based on various criteria. Often Organizations are selected in order to spotlight their achievements in developing women leaders. Individuals are given awards for their exemplary leadership or as champions of women’s leadership.
  1. Coaching: A one-on-one real-time relationship with an objective person who helps her client identify what she truly desires from work and/or life, set targets, and overcome obstacles. She listens and asks questions while the client poses a problem, and together they find solutions 
  1. Community Service: As part of the leadership development for women, participants are required to plan and delivery some program or service to their community. Often this is done in small groups, although individual service occurs too.
  1. Conferences: One or more days with keynote speeches, workshops, an exhibit hall, and opportunities for networking.
  1. Conference Calls:  Calls are made regularly or periodically among participants, or between a coach and participants with the opportunity for everyone to participate to keep them connected. Topics vary.
  1. Job Assignments: Since most women work in “staff” rather than “line” positions, these women are given opportunities for job assignments in areas in which they need experience so they will be better qualified for a promotion at higher levels.
  1. Mentors:  The Mentee or Protégé is matched up with someone with more experience, wisdom or knowledge, either in their own organization or with another in their industry or profession. The Mentor opens doors of opportunity, acts as a sounding board, challenges thinking, provides candid feedback, encourages and guides the individual towards her goals.
  1. Networking: The Individual has a conscious plan she uses to meet new people, individually or in groups, in order to enhance her career, find needed resources, or information.
  1. Newsletters: A communication vehicle, print or web based, to inform readers of upcoming events, review books and other media, spotlight individuals or organizational practices, and provide other information that enhances professional development. 
  1. Organization Development & Consulting: Organizations use the assess and improve their culture, practices, policies and procedures; obtain upper management support; design, and implement various initiatives, programs, policies and procedures; and evaluate these periodically.
  1. Research: Accepted research methods are used to evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives, program goals, succession plans, the selection, promotion, and retention of target groups, and cultural factors all of which affect women leaders.
  1. Self-Paced Learning Resources: Include books, magazines, audio tapes, CDs, video tapes, and self scored assessments. Recommended resources are used within an ongoing leadership program; within a Mentor or Coaching relationship; or as found and utilized by individuals on their own.
  1. Speakers, Seminars & Symposiums: Short programs utilizing an expert or experts to present ideas, concepts, reports, skills to enhance leaders. Most of the time this is one-way communication with a question and answer portion.
  1. Special Interest Groups: Called a SIG, these small groups are created around a specific topic, issue or interest, by and for individuals who want or need this specialized information.
  1. Training and Education: Often called “Classroom” learning where an individual trainer, facilitator or teacher designs and develops learning modules using a variety of adult learning methodologies.  
  1. Web-Based Training and Resources: Computer Based Training (CBT) are learning modules on a website where individuals can learn at their own convenience and pace.
